Fantasy in Vain, a machinima
Some time ago i posted about Vain Inc Gallery, is a project by two really good photographers and really nice girls, Nyla Rossini and Toko Voom. They have one of the best fashion magazines in Second Life, but also wanted to go further away with and art gallery, a really new concept.
They wanted to have a gallery where different resident creators were showing their vision about a theme monthly. In August 2008 the theme was Fantasy.
Last friday Nyla asked me to make a machinima showing my point of view of the gallery during that month, to keep a record of what was the experience. I was really happy with the idea and this is the result:
I liked it and Nyla and Toko liked it too, so… hope you like it too!
You can visit Vain Inc. Gallery following this SLurl, also you can see the Gallery Guidebook here.
Torley is awesomazing our experience… or something like that
I want to say it, i’m a big fan of Torley.
Lately some “critics” against Torley appeared in blogs, forums and other places. They criticise his apparent… how to say it?… “fake happiness”. He wrote a really interesting post about that.
I’m not writing this post because i think he needs a defense or something, as you can say in his post he can do it himself alone. Torley is not perfect, but is himself (even if he were a character, what is not), and that’s why i’m think he is so cool.
The photo below is taken in Here, the new Torley’s island. Really nice and interesting place, kinda trippy but full of imagination. Anyway, if you don’t like neon pink and neon green colours… better don’t go then.
Well, i’m sure you know Torley enough, so i’ll just say my opinion about him. First, he rocks! He is the only Linden that pushes our moral up even in the worse moments. Second, his Videotutorials. I learned a lot thanks to them, since basic scripting, nice tricks and some nice things more. Third, his Office Hours, i was there a couple of times, and he always listens and tries to answer your questions. Write yourself the fourth reason in the comments.
Torley published in his YouTube channel a new machinima, and well, i find it so cool that need to share it with you all:
LSL scripting… ur doing it wrong
Now that Mono is ready to lauch in Second Life with the new server software version 1.24 is time for me to post about scripting.
Wanted to post this image because that’s how i feel when i try to script, seriously, is like if i had to white in Chinese:
One friend of mine always says one should have a mathematical mind to understand scripting or any kind of coding, and i think he is right. I can write simple scripts like particles, content givers or stuff like that, and the way of learning was reading free scripts you can find around, or thanks to Torley’s videotutorials.
I tried to write scripts following the LSL Wiki Page, and even with that help i find it quite difficult.
Only once i made an “special” script to make an object flicker like if it was neon, and finally need the help of a friend because had all the time the same result: “Syntax error”, and all due a comma…
Some day i’ll know how to script… maybe the day Linden Lab add in the client a way to do it without typing code. There are rumours this day is coming, for what i read they may be working on a way of simplify scripting, through some menus. Of course i understand some “high scripting” will be needed for some “really special” things, but at least for simple scripting a better help will be needed… an very welcome!

This time Selavy Oh will display a new work on Level 3 of Arthole, sadly this time Ichibot Nishi won’t have an installation due to some agenda issues.
As i know the work of two of the artist i really suggest you visit Arthole, possibly one of the most interesting art spaces in Second Life.
Location: Kress (168,88,391)
Art is resistance
Last Saturday i was walking around, visiting Apocalypse (SLurl). I love that region, but, as part of Midian City, normally is really laggy. A Saturday morning (European time) is a good moment to visit it.
Walking around i saw this sign:
It speaks about Art as resistance, as a form of fight against the power… really interesting concepts for me.
I really think Art is resistance (of course, is not only resistance), Art should be used to express all parts of the human mind (and soul), from the sense of beauty to memories, from politics to faith. The first thing that any dictatorship attack is the freedom of expression… that should mean Art has to resist that, to fight against that.
Let’s talk now about Art into Second Life… is it Resistance? Well, it may be. One line of the sign says: “Art is action without violence”, so griefers are not artists (even they can be, i presume it will depend on the originality of the concept and in the execution of the action itself). Some interesting images and creations appeared to protest against the limitations about contents in SL5B, that was resistance. Anyway, not only Linden Lab actions deserve that actions, i see often in SL creative ways to fight about RL issues, but, sadly every action has a reaction.
Some time ago, in a conversation with Arahan Claveau, we were talking about the reactions that caused one of his works (well, most of Arahan’s works cause reaction). Someone “protested” because considered Arahan’s installation political arguing that art shouldn’t be political (Arahan, if you read this and i’m wrong or missed a part, please correct me). That’s one of the most stupid affirmations i ever heard. Art SHOULD be political, Art should be a reaction.
I’m nobody to say people what they should do, i just can tell it to myself (and even that way i don’t listen myself sometimes), but is easy to feel most of the so-called SLart is empty. No message, no action, no expression, just some beautiful, or not so beautiful effects. Don’t misunderstand me, i like beautiful pictures or sculptures that don’t have other intention that being beautiful, is just i miss some more meaning content in SLart, some more action… Anyway, there are some SLcreators i really enjoy, in Flickr or in-world, because i find their creations sometimes full of meaning, full of fun, full of passion and beauty.
