Windlight® + Shadows in SL® = Ooooooooh!
This slideshow requires JavaScript.
Shadows in SL combined with different Windlight settings produce some interesting effects. Colored shadows, different light feeling over avatars and objects, etc. Just wanted to show some of the options in the slideshow above.
It seems for the moment shadows are only working properly in computers (PC or Mac) using Nvidia graphics cards or the latest ATI graphics cards. To set shadows on in Second Life if your viewer includes them, activate Develop Menu (Ctrl+Alt+Q), select Rendering and activate Lighting and Shadows. Shadows are not working in all the viewers, i know for sure they work in Linden Lab’s SL viewer 2.3 and in the 2.4 Snowstorm experimental edition, if you use a TPV (Third Party Viewer), please contact the developer for more information.

A future world of shadows

OMG!!! /me drolls… Shadows in Second Life!!!!
Well, for what we can see in that video by Torley it seems shadows are the next big thing (hopefully after they fix assets servers and central database).
I know is not good that shadows are not working with prims, but well, for the moment is a good start, anyway… it seems finally we all will need a new video card with 1 Gb of memory.
UPDATE (Jun 11th): Posted a second video by Torley where you can see clearly shadows are produced by prims too, it just left to know how alpha textures work with shadows. As you can see in the comments this will work (for the moment) only for Nvidia 8XXX cards, for the moment not for ATI Radeon or Mac computers.
Windlight and Machinima contests in Koinup
Koinup organized a couple of interesting contests of photography and machinima in SL. Be sure to take a look, i think both are really interesting.
Please, if you are interested check the Windlight contest rules here and the Machinima one here.
I still didn’t posted a Machinima for the contest… but i posted (for the moment) this pic to the Windlight contest:
Hope you like it.
UPDATE (Apr, 22 2008): He he, finally i posted a machinima in the contest too, more a experiment with colour lightning in Windlight, sorry for the low frame rate.
More about issues in Hi-Res Snapshots
Some days ago i wrote a post about some problems i was having with Hi-Res snapshots to disk with the Windlight Second Life® viewers (not only the “Test Software” ones, also the “Main” client right now). I didn’t tried for the moment the new 1.20 release candidate, in the Official Linden Blog they said is better not to use it for the moment in a Mac using an Apple Mighty Mouse (this is my case), but it seems is happening worse and to more people in the new Release Candidate.
So… there is my JIRA issue report #WMR-3711, and now, as i saw in a post in Vint Falken’s blog, there is another one related, the JIRA issue report #WMR-6240. Also some other problems with snapshots as you can see in this post by Ana Lutetia in the JIRA issue report #WMR-6031. As you can see a lot to fix in snapshots.
If you are having this problems too, please, go to the JIRA, comment and vote for this Issue Reports.
Windlight settings, so fun to play with them…
Some time ago I posted some information about a Windlight sky preset that AM Radio had published in Flickr to share with everybody.
I think AM Radio had a great idea. Windlight is a great tool, it gives you the possibility of exploring light, shadows, it gives a totally new vision of Second Life and opens a new door for creativity.
Some days ago I was playing with different settings in SLsky and following the path AM Radio opened I’d like to share them with you.
First, and old known, Nostalgia:
Here I’m using the Nostalgia sky by AM Radio, you can download it here, then follow the instructions at the end of the post to install it.
Sometimes I’m tired of the sun in SL, the weather is always perfect, so I made this setting, Storm:
You can download the Storm sky setting here, then install it following the instructions at the end of the post.
And finally one a bit trippy, he he he, but my favourite, Bright Life. Even the colors are no natural (at least in my RL life) I like it a lot.
Click here to download the Bright Life setting, then install it following the instructions at the end of the post.
All the settings can be downloaded in the BOX widget in the right column if you don’t want to open a new window in your explorer.
To install them follow this instructions:
- Download the files in the links up or in the BOX widget in the right side column of this page.
- Then move the file .xml to the following folder:
-
In a Windows PC move it to C: \ Program Files \ SecondLifeWindLight \ app_settings \ windlight \ skies
-
In Mac go to the Application folder or to the one you have saved the Second Life Windlight viewer, Ctrl+click on it and select “Explore the package” or something like that (sorry, my Mac OS X is in spanish). Then open the folders Contents, Resources, app_settings, windlight, skies and save the file there.
-
- Restart Windlight viewer.
- Select Nostalgia, Storm or Bright Life in the Sky Presets menu.
Sorry, i don’t know how to do in it Linux, but sure someone can comment here and give the info.
Come on, play with Windlight, share your dream (or nightmare) sky with all.
